Annapurna Sanctuary
Tatopani - Landruk

It is a long and hard day's walk from Tatopani to Ghorepani since you have to climb 1600 meters. I found a porter, Deepak, in Tatopani, who accompanied me for the next six days to Annapurna Sanctuary and to Pothana.

On your way to Ghorepani you pass through beautiful Brahman and Magar villages

Dhaulagiri
Early in the morning (around 5.15) people start climbing for 45 minutes from Ghorepani to Poon Hill, 3210 m, to view the sunrise over the Himalayas: Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhare and many more.

Annapurna Sanctuary /
Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)

Annapurna I

The trek into the area below the massive south face of Annapurna - known as the Annapurna Sanctuary - is one of the popular treks in Nepal. The trek leads through bamboo and rhododendron forests into the vast mountain-ringed amphitheatre of the Sanctuary. Here are magnificent views of Annapurna I and III, Annapurna South, Glacier Dome, Gangapurna, and the fishtail-shaped peak of Machhapuchhare. This trek allows access to the high mountains of the Himalayas within a reasonable timeframe and with a maximum altitude of 4130 m.

There are no villages between Chomrong and the Sanctuary, but collections of lodges about every 2 hours. Many of these lodges are open only during the peak seasons of October to November and February to March. During December and January, innkeepers move back down to Chomrong because of heavy snows. In the spring, frequent avalanches close down the sanctuary and make trekking dangerous.

Annapurna, at 8091m, is the 10th highest mountain in the world and is known as the first 8000 m peak to be climbed - by Herzog's French party in 1950.

Chomrong

Chomrong is a Gurung village, the last village before the Sanctuary.

Landruk / Gurung villages

There are many interesting Gurung villages in the hills south of the Annapurnas. Ghandruk is the largest, but Landruk is another fine village with beautiful traditional houses.
