Frequented ever since the times
of the ancient Romans, some of these trails, because of their
accessibility, have acquired increasing importance as far as trading
between the neighbouring valleys is concerned. This importance grew so
much that, at times, the trails were officially guarded. It happened in
the XVIth century when danger of a plague was impending on the area.
During religious conflicts in the same century, the mountain passes of the
Valleys of Lanzo were used to "discreetly" transfer the Holy
Shroud from Chambery to Turin. In more recent years, members of the
Turin's Savoia nobility, who owned summer resort in the valleys, walked
and rode on these same trails. Nowadays these trails, obsolete compared
to modern routes, offer a chance to discover a wild and not too crowded
territory. On the same territory local mountaineering developed in the
last century and gave birth to the Italian Alpine Club (CAI).
At
an hour drive from Turin, at the end of the Valleys of Lanzo, you will
find the places from where to start for the mountain huts, which will
allow you to do the trekking on these mountains. After having left the car
down in the valleys, you will have a choice of trails to suit your
capabilities: beginner, skilled mountaineer or family trekking.
What
follows is just a brief and schematic description of the itineraries you
may choose for trekking on these mountains. According to your starting
place, it will be easy to select the hut from where you will be able to
begin the chosen trekking. For this reason, the single legs of the
trekking are explained at random.
Even
though the suggested itineraries are not exceedingly difficult (in past
years local people used them to trade their livestock), nowadays some of
these trails cannot be covered as in the past because of environmental and
climatic changes. It is, therefore, advisable to plan carefully your
trekking in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.
