The bridges to Nar

The old bridge to Nar
To reach Nar you first pass
a bridge
spanning a deep and narrow gorge
and an old fortress that controlled the approach to Nar. The old bridge
is still there, but it has now been replaced by a steel structure.

After the bridges you reach the Nar gates at the top of the hill and pass by a line
of wonderful chortens.

Turning a corner you are rewarded with great views of Nar, the
patterns of the surrounding barley and mustard fields (left) and the snow peaks looming
overhead (Pisang Peak, middle, and Mt Kanguru, right).

The village of Nar (Naar) has about 70 houses.
The
villagers grow barley, potatoes and buckwheat. In their vegetable
gardens they grow cabbages, cauliflower, onions, etc.
Threshing corn

The threshing starts every night
around 3 o’clock (the reason for the early start is not clear to me).
The villagers are paid Rp. 140 a day for threshing corn all day
long.

Ploughing and digging

Now after the harvest the fields are
ploughed with two yaks. It takes one man to control the yaks and one
man to hold the plough, plus a large number of women who dig and
clean the upturned soil with shovels.

In Nar it freezes at night, but during
the day the sun is hot
and I can sit outside in a T-shirt.
