Maoist fees / "donations"

Once you leave the main roads and go
trekking into the mountains, you are likely to run
into Maoist insurgents who will ask for fees or
"donations" to let you into the area they control.
I have never run into trouble with the Maoists, I have
never met anyone who did, and they wouldn´t keep me from visiting Nepal
again - as long as the situation doesn't deteriorate as far as tourists
are concerned (as of March 06). If you are polite and deal with
them - negotiate with them - politely, I believe you are safe. I met
them in Kanchenjunga in 2004 (Chiruwa and Olangchung Gola) and my sirdar
managed to negotiate the fees down considerably.
In Langtang/Helambu in 2005 I didn't see them. I don't think they stay
in Langtang, but you may see them in Helambu.
On the Annapurna Circuit 2005 I didn't run into them until Ghorepani.
They asked for a fixed rate of 1200 rp., which could not be negotiated.
Other travellers met the Maoists in Jagat, where they demanded 100 rp a
day for your hike in the Annapurnas. (If you have already got a receipt
in Jagat which covers your trip, you don't pay again in Ghorepani.)
In my experience they contact you politely in your camp
or your guesthouse, and as long as you don't refuse to pay, nothing
is going to happen to you except that you lose some money and
incidentally support people you might not agree with.
The fees vary considerably from one district to
another - and from one year to the next. I would be happy
to publish the latest information on Maoist fees in
the trekking regions of Nepal. Just
email me the
date, location and amount of money you paid on your
trek:

 Trekking Guide/Porter guide
Mingmar Tamang
Mingmar was the leading sherpa on my group trek to Kanchenjunga in 2004
and my porter/guide in Langtang/Helambu 2005. He is 24 years old
(November 2005) and was born near Phaplu in Solo south of Lukla. He is a
very experienced guide, very strong and friendly, loyal and reliable. If
his English was better, he would be perfect (but then he would not be
available as a porter/guide).
I feel happy to recommend him.
